Funding Your International Experience
Your Financial Aid and Education Abroad
Students eligible for federal financial aid can use that financial aid to fund their education abroad program. Because financial aid is generally not available during the summer sessions, students will benefit most when they use their financial aid to fund a semester or academic year abroad. In addition, organizations that offer generous funding for financial aid generally make awards for long term study abroad (semester or academic year).
Helpful Tips:
-
Make sure you have a valid FAFSA on file with the VSU Financial Aid Office. Attend the Financial Aid fairs each year to stay informed about resources and deadlines.
-
Complete the Study Abroad Approval Form and submit it to the campus Office for International Education.
- Consult with your education abroad advisor to complete an "estimated budget" for the specific program you want to attend. (Many education abroad programs will have these on their web sites.)
- Make an appointment with your VSU Financial Aid Advisor to determine how much aid you are eligible to apply toward your program.
-
Make arrangements with the education abroad program provider for payment with your financial aid disbursement. This will require that you complete the VSU Study Abroad Consortium Agreement Form (available from the campus Office for International Education).
-
Attend the education abroad advising sessions to learn more about other types of funding that can supplement your financial aid award. Seek information and assistance from the Office for International Education.
